46 - July 12, 2018, More on the Denali Highway

We're in Delta Junction, AK right now:

We arrived in Cantwell, AK, and had to make the decision on whether to drive the Denali Highway or not.
We went for it. We were not disappointed.

It was rough going and our newly repaired bumper got quite a workout. We were also very glad of our new tires.
We got the most wonderful views! Amazing countryside! Striking snow capped mountains, glaciers, wildlife and practically no one else around. Very lightly traveled route.

Whenever we see a gas station, we fill up. You never know where the next one is. This was our last stop before getting on the Denali Highway.

The end of the pavement. Slow going. Average speed prob 20 mph? down to 5 mph at times, sometimes 30 mph

We've seen a few cyclists traversing the Denali Highway, strangely, all were middle aged men.

Unbelievable!!!! You don't have to be a geologist to see how the glaciers carve out the valleys. So cool. I don't know how many glaciers we saw, but we did see quite a few.  Stunning.

We pulled over onto a little pull-off on the side of the road for the night. We try to block out the sunlight as much as possible with Reflectix pieces in our windows. The mini blinds don't block much sun at all. The photo below was probably at 10pm? Adam is in our huge comfy king bed, sound asleep.

I always set up everything to make coffee the night before so the morning is as easy as possible. Heating water for coffee in the morning.

Here's our little propane heater. The furnace that came with the rv uses quite a bit of electricity AND it's loud. We brought our little propane heater. It uses the little bottles of propane, it's silent and uses no electric. We crank it up before we go to bed, warm everything up. We got it to 80F within an hour. Then, we turn it off completely to sleep. Then turn it on again in the morning. Works like a charm. That night was our coldest so far, 42F. We were very cozy. I had bought a winter weight duvet from England. Not that expensive but it is as warm as any cold weather sleeping bag. The duvet must be 4" thick? Anyway, no complaints.

We stopped for the promise of Pizza!
The little travel trailer below made the trip up all the way from CA The owner, Ron, is fixing her up to do some serious traveling.
Ron is helping his brother, the owner out til September(sorry, cant remember his name, but he makes a great pizza). An amazing spot with guest cabins and everything you need for an incredible fishing adventure or outdoor adventure of any kind.

I should have taken a photo of our pizza. It was a beautiful sight and delicious! How do they do that? they're off the grid completely, diesel generators. Absolutely, an amazing spot, surrounded by lakes full of fish. If you're ever in the area...

Paved road starts again on the other side of the bridge

You just don't get used to the spectacular views!

Another stop for gas, only 2 gas stations I believe, on this road.

and more views of the Alaska Range

We got a few glimpses of the Alaska Pipeline.

We made it to Delta Junction and into an RV park, The Snowed Inn. Full hookups. We needed to "dump" since we'd been boon docking. Doing laundry now.
