50 - Dawson City to Inuvik

Image
On Google Maps Don't forget, you can always find our current location here . From Dawson City, we headed the 20 or so miles to the start of the Dempster Highway. The Dempster is another unpaved/gravel road which takes you north to the Arctic Circle and Inuvik, and more recently, all the way to Tuktoyaktuk, and the shores of the Arctic Ocean.  It had been rainiing on and off as we took a left on the Dempster and headed north. The road was not in great shape. Tons of teeth rattling potholes and washboard ridges. We found that we could rarely go above 25mph, and we often went quite a bit more slowly. Our poor little Winnefred took a real beating. Within 15 minutes of starting on the Dempster, an enormous tour bus passed us coming the other way at a very high rate of speed. Next thing we knew mud and gravel washed across our windsheild, blinding us for a minute til we could clear it with our wipers. That's how our windsheild cracked. The crack

Our little Winnebago Winnefred came to us with a perfectly functioning refrigerator. It works on both propane and 120v electric (when we're plugged in.) This means that the only way we could use it on the road would be to run the propane while driving. Both Adam and I feel uncomfortable driving with the propane burning. Enter, the Engel. Engel portable fridges are well known by cruising sailors. These little devices are true compression driven refrigerators and their current draw (both plugged into 120v or 12v) is very, very low. This is not one of those "thermal" portables. I have one of those and they are great on roadtrips. This is much, much better.  I believe these were first developed to bring vaccines to remote parts of the world. This is what these Engels are designed to do. The downside is that they are very pricey, in the $600 neighborhood. Ebay to the rescue again. Unbelievably, I found one, un-used and still in the original box, for $299. I know, still expensiv

41 - Saturday, July 7, 2018, Seward, AK; 4th of July; Boat Tour

Adam, the doggies and I have been enjoying Seward alot. They have a wonderful 4th celebration. They shoot off fireworks at 12am, (yeah, midnight, so very, very late at night on the 3rd) July 4th. It's still light out but getting a little dark. You can still see the fireworks. Photographing them isn't too hard since it's still light. We got up and dragged out our chairs to watch. Kind of surreal, Seward at midnight. We're still in the by-the-hour parking lot, paying $20/24hrs with lots of like-minded neighbors. On the day of the 4th, Adam the doggies and I walked the .75 mile or so to the little downtown area. There were a number of different heats for the Mt. Marathon race. It was being video'd for TV. You can see by the clothes everyone is wearing, it's warm & sunny. Mt. Marathon in the background Liam really wants to be a sled dog Below is the story of the 1964 earthquake and subsequent tsunami
